Why Did My Mushroom Grow Stall?

And What Should I Check First?

You checked your monotub this morning and nothing has changed with your magic mushroom grow.

Yesterday, nothing changed either. 

Your mushrooms were pinning beautifully, or your mycelium was colonizing right on schedule, and now everything has just stopped.

Take a breath.

A stalled grow is one of the most common experiences in magic mushroom cultivation, and in most cases, it comes down to one of four fixable problems.

Before you tear apart your setup or start over, run through this fast triage sequence.

It is designed to help you identify the most likely cause in minutes, not hours.

The Four-Point Stall Check

 Work through these in order.

Each one builds on the last, and the sequence moves from the easiest fix to the most serious issue.

Check 1: Temperature

This is the most common and most overlooked cause of a stall.

**What to look for:**

  • Has the room temperature dropped below 74°F or risen above 86°F?
  • Did the season change recently? A shift from warm to cool weather catches a lot of growers off guard.
  • Is your grow space near an exterior wall, a window, or an air vent?

**What is happening:** Mycelium slows dramatically outside its preferred range.

Most psilocybin species want 84°F to 86°F for colonization and 74-78F for fruiting.

If your space has drifted outside that window, growth can appear to stop completely.

If you are using the mono tub method I teach in my grow book, make sure your water bath temperature is set correctly, AS WELL AS your programmed temperature

**The fix:** Get a simple thermometer inside your grow space, not on the wall nearby, but right next to your bags or tubs.

Stabilize the temperature within the correct range for your species and give it 48 hours before you worry further.

Check 2: Moisture

If temperature checks out, moisture is your next suspect.

**What to look for:**

  • Does the surface of your substrate look dry? If you are fruiting, are there fine water droplets visible on the surface?
  • Are the walls of your fruiting chamber dry instead of showing condensation?

**What is happening:** Mycelium needs consistent moisture to grow.

A substrate that has dried out even slightly at the surface can cause pinning to abort and colonization to pause.

On the other end, a waterlogged substrate suffocates mycelium and creates conditions for bacterial contamination.

**The fix:** For fruiting, mist the walls and lid of your chamber rather than spraying directly onto pins.

You want to maintain a fine layer of tiny droplets on the substrate surface.

If your substrate has dried out during colonization, the damage may already be done, but increasing ambient humidity can sometimes restart progress.

The surface should glisten, not pool.

Check 3: Fresh Air Exchange

This is the one that newer growers underestimate the most.

**What to look for:**

  • Do you see fuzzy, reaching mycelium growing upward off the substrate surface instead of forming pins?
  • Are your pins forming but then growing long, thin stems with tiny caps?
  • Does the air inside your chamber smell stale or slightly sour?

**What is happening:** Mushrooms need oxygen and they produce carbon dioxide.

CO2 is heavier than air and settles at the bottom of enclosed spaces.

When CO2 builds up, the mycelium gets confused.

It keeps growing vegetatively instead of switching to fruiting, or it produces malformed fruits that eventually abort.

**The fix:** Fan the lid of your fruiting chamber two to three times per day or more (only during fruiting phase...do NOT open the lid during colonization stage).

Check that your air exchange holes are not blocked.

You should feel gentle, indirect air movement without creating a draft that dries everything out.

Fresh air exchange and humidity work as a team.

You almost always need to mist after you fan.

Check 4: Contamination

This is the check growers fear most, but it is last on the list for a reason.

Temperature, moisture, and air exchange problems are far more common causes of a stall.

**What to look for:**

  • Any green, black, orange, or pink patches on the substrate surface
  • A sweet, sour, or rotten smell that was not there before
  • Slimy or wet spots that look different from healthy mycelium
  • Healthy white mycelium will smell earthy or like fresh mushrooms

**What is happening:** Contamination from mold or bacteria has overtaken part of your substrate and is competing with or killing your mycelium.

The stall is your mycelium losing that battle.

**The fix:** Small spots of contamination on an otherwise healthy, fully colonized substrate can sometimes be cut away with a clean spoon and drops of hydrogen peroxide can treat the small area. Mushrooms won't pin here, but the contam can be quarantined so it doesn't spread. 

If a large area of your grow is contaminated, remove it from your grow space, clean the area thoroughly, and start fresh.

Usually, trying to save a large sized contaminated grow usually risks spreading the problem to everything else.

What If Everything Checks Out?

Sometimes a stall is just a pause.

Mycelium does not grow at a constant rate.

It can slow down as it consolidates, especially right before pinning.

If your temperature, moisture, and air exchange are all in range and you see no signs of contamination, give it three to five more days before making changes.

The biggest mistake during a stall is overcorrecting.

Adjusting too many variables at once makes it impossible to know what actually worked.

Change one thing.

Wait 48 hours.

Observe.

That patience is the skill that separates growers who struggle from growers who harvest consistently.

You have got this. Most stalls end with mushrooms.
