Then you mix it into your bulk substrate.

And here's what I learned the hard way — the spawn-to-bulk step is where most contamination sneaks in.

Not during inoculation.

Not during fruiting.

Before You Even Open That Spawn Jar

Pasteurize or sterilize your bulk substrate properly.

This is number one.

If your sub isn't right, nothing else saves you.

Coco coir? Bucket tek at 170°F for at least 90 minutes.

Manure-based? Pressure cook it.

Let your substrate cool to under 80°F before mixing.

Hot substrate kills your mycelium and gives bacteria a head start.

Patience here pays off big.

Confirm your spawn is fully colonized.

Your Workspace Matters More Than You Think

Wipe down every surface with isopropyl alcohol (70%).

Table, tub walls, your tools — everything your substrate or spawn might touch.

Work in still air.

A still air box works great here.

No need for a flow hood at this step, but drafts are your enemy.

Wear gloves.

Fresh ones.

And hit them with alcohol before you start, and in between every step of your process.

At the Moment of Mixing

Work quickly.

The less time your substrate sits exposed, the better.

Speed beats perfection here.

Use a clean tool or gloved hands to break up spawn and distribute it evenly.

Clumpy spawn means slow colonization.

Slow colonization means contamination wins the race.

Seal your tub with a lid immediately after mixing.

Don't admire your work with the lid off!

Right After Mixing

Store your tub in a clean, warm spot (72-78°F).

Consistent temperature speeds colonization.

Don't open it.

Seriously.

Leave it alone for 7-10 days.

Every peek is a contamination risk.

Why This Order Matters

Most guides treat every step equally.

They're not.

Substrate prep and spawn quality account for roughly 80% of your contamination risk at this stage.
