Spawn-to-Bulk Troubleshooting

Fix Stalls, Smells, and Patchy Growth

You mixed your spawn and substrate.

You sealed the tub.

You waited.

And now something looks... wrong.

Don't panic.

Seriously.

Take a breath.

Most spawn-to-bulk problems are fixable if you catch them early and respond calmly.

I've been there, staring into a tub at 2 AM wondering if I just wasted two weeks of my life.

You probably haven't.

Let's figure out what's going on.

Your Colonization Stalled

It started strong, then just... stopped.

White growth everywhere on day four, nothing new by day ten.

**Likely cause:**

Temperature dropped, or your substrate is too wet.

Mycelium slows down hard below 70°F and practically quits in soggy conditions.

**Safest fix:**

Check your ambient temp.

You want 72–76°F consistently for most gourmet species and psilocybin.

If the substrate feels waterlogged when you press it, you overmixed or your field capacity was off.

Crack the lid slightly to let excess moisture escape.

Give it three more days before you make any big decisions.

Something Smells Sour or Sweet

Healthy mycelium smells earthy and clean.

One of my favorite smells in the world!

If your tub smells like dirty socks, sour milk, or fermenting fruit?

That's bacteria.

**Likely cause:**

  • Contaminated spawn
  • substrate wasn't pasteurized properly, or
  • you introduced bacteria during mixing.

**Safest fix:**

If the smell is mild and localized, isolate the tub and wait.

Sometimes mycelium fights through.

If the whole tub reeks?

Cut your losses.

Seriously.

Bury it outside and start fresh.

Chasing a contaminated tub rarely ends well.

I've tried.

It doesn't.

Wet Spots or Pooling Water

You see shiny, wet patches sitting on the surface.

The mycelium around them looks thin or absent.

**Likely cause:**

  • Too much moisture
  • poor air exchange, or
  • uneven substrate depth.

**Safest fix:**

  • Dab the pooling water gently with a clean paper towel (wash your hands well before).
  • Fan the tub a few extra times per day.
  • Make sure your substrate is an even depth across the whole tub.

Thin spots dry out, thick spots pool up.

Aim for three to four inches, nice and level.

Patchy or Uneven Growth

Some areas are thick and white.

Others are bare substrate staring back at you.

**Likely cause:**

  • Uneven spawn distribution during mixing, or
  • hot and cold spots in your grow space.

**Safest fix:**

You can't really remix at this point.

But you can rotate the tub so all sides get equal conditions.

If the bare patches stay bare after a week, they probably won't catch up.

Focus on the healthy zones and let them do their thing.

The Big Takeaway

Most spawn-to-bulk problems come down to three things:

  • moisture,
  • temperature, and
  • cleanliness.

Nail those three and you'll avoid ninety percent of these headaches next time.

Your tub isn't ruined until it's ruined.

Give it time, make small adjustments, and trust the process.
