You check your hygrometer.
It reads 92% RH.
Perfect range, right?
But your pins are aborting.
They're turning brown at the tips.
Some look like tiny dried-out raisins instead of healthy primordia pushing toward first flush.
So what gives?
Here's the thing:
That number on your hygrometer might be lying to you.
Or more accurately, it might be telling you the truth about the wrong spot in your fruiting chamber.
When growers come to me with drying pins, I walk them through three questions.
The answer is almost always hiding in one of these.
Most cheap hygrometers measure the air immediately around the sensor.
If that sensor is sitting near your perlite layer or next to a misting nozzle, it's reading the wettest air in the chamber.
Meanwhile, the air right at your substrate surface — where your pins are actually trying to grow — could be significantly drier.
Move your sensor to substrate level.
You might be shocked at the difference.
This is the big one.
Stagnant pockets of air create microclimates inside your chamber.
You can have 95% RH in one corner and 80% in another.
Pins don't care about your average, lol!
They care about what's happening right at their surface.
But here's the catch.
Too much direct airflow is just as deadly.
A fan blowing across exposed pins wicks moisture faster than the mycelium can replace it.
You need gentle, indirect air exchange — enough to refresh CO2 but not enough to create a breeze on the fruiting surface.
Healthy pinning conditions show thousands of tiny water droplets on the surface.
Not pools.
Not dry patches.
Fine, even droplets.
If you see puddles, you're over-misting and probably suffocating pins.
If the surface looks matte and dry between mistings, your misting schedule isn't frequent enough — or your FAE is too aggressive.

Start here and work down.
→ You're over-misting.
→ Sensor placement issue.
→ Check temperature swings.
A 10°F drop overnight can cause condensation cycles that damage primordia.
It's not a fancy humidifier or an expensive controller.
It's:
Get the surface conditions right and the pins will tell you.
Thousands of tiny droplets.
Gentle air movement.
Consistent temps.
That's the whole game.
