Where to Place Humidity and Temperature Sensors in a Grow Tent

Ever stared at your hygrometer reading 90% humidity and thought, "Perfect!"... only to find your mushrooms cracking and drying out?

Yeah. Been there. And it drove me absolutely nuts.

Here's what nobody told me when I started growing mushrooms in a tent:

**where you place your sensors matters just as much as what they read.**

The Stratification Trap

Picture this:

Hot, humid air rises.

Cool, dry air sinks. Your grow tent isn't one uniform environment.

It's layers. Like a cake, but way less delicious.

This layering is called stratification, and it's the sneaky gremlin behind most "but my readings looked fine!" disasters.

The mushrooms are sensitive to this stratification in the fruiting stage, too...

Long, leggy shrooms?

This could possibly mean a build-up of C02...and the shroomies are literally "reaching" for higher oxygen (an air stratification above the built up C02 layer).

If your sensor sits at the top of your tent?

You're reading the warmest, most humid air.

Stick it on the floor?

You're getting the coolest, driest reading.

Neither one tells you what your mushrooms are actually experiencing.

So Where Should the Sensors Go?

**Put them at canopy level.**

Right where your mushrooms are growing.

That's it.

That's the golden rule.

Your mushrooms don't care what the air feels like at the ceiling, lol!

They care about the microclimate surrounding their pins and fruits.

So your sensor should live there too.

Here's my setup that finally stopped the madness:

  • **Place your sensor 1-2 inches from your fruiting blocks**, at the same height as your growing mushrooms
  • **Keep it in the airflow path**, not tucked behind a shelf or hidden in a dead zone
  • **Avoid placing sensors directly in front of your humidifier output** — you'll get a false spike that'll make you think you're running a tropical rainforest

That last one?

I learned it the hard way.

My readings said 95%.

My oyster mushrooms said otherwise.

They were cracking like desert mud.

## Quick Placement Checklist

  1. Sensor at canopy height (where fruits actually grow)
  2. In the airflow stream, not behind obstacles
  3. Away from direct humidifier mist
  4. Away from fan output (evaporation skews readings low)
  5. Not touching the tent walls (condensation gives false highs)

One More Trick

Use **two sensors**.

Put one at canopy level and one near the top of the tent.

If there's more than a 5-degree temperature difference or 10% humidity gap between them?

Your airflow needs work.

That gap is stratification telling you, "Hey, fix your fan setup!"
Think of the second sensor as your early warning system.

It catches problems before your mushrooms do.

The Bottom Line

Wrong sensor placement leads to wrong readings.

Wrong readings lead to wrong decisions.

We've made plenty of those life decisions, haven't we, lol?!

And wrong decisions lead to sad, sad mushrooms.

Take five minutes to reposition your sensors today.

Your next flush will thank you for it.
