Humidistat Hysteresis for Mushrooms

 Stop the Short-Cycling Madness

Ever watch your humidifier kick on, shut off, kick on, shut off — over and over?

That's short-cycling.

And your mushrooms hate it.

Here's the fix:

It's called **hysteresis** (or "differential").

It's the gap between when your humidistat turns ON and when it turns OFF.

What Actually Works for Mushroom Grows

Most advice out there is written for plants.

Mushrooms are different.

They need **steady, high humidity** — usually 85–95% RH during fruiting.

Here's a real-world example that stopped my tent from going haywire:

  •  **Setpoint:** 90% RH
  •  **Differential:** 5%
  • **Humidifier kicks ON** at 85% RH
  •  **Humidifier shuts OFF** at 90% RH

That 5% gap gives your system breathing room.

Why Does Short-Cycling Matter?

Short-cycling wears out your humidifier fast.

It also creates wild humidity swings right at the canopy level — even if your controller *thinks* things are stable.

I burned through two cheap ultrasonic units before I figured this out! 

Your mushroom pins are incredibly sensitive.

Those constant micro-fluctuations can cause aborts and weird, cracked caps.

Not fun.

Dialing It In

Start with a **5% differential.**

Watch your system for a full fruiting cycle.

If you're still seeing rapid on-off behavior, widen it to 7%.

Running a small tent?

You might need a **narrower** differential — say 3% — because humidity drops fast in tight spaces.

Bigger rooms hold moisture longer, so a wider gap works fine.

**Quick tip:** Place your hygrometer sensor at canopy height, away from the humidifier output.

I stuck mine right next to the mister once.

The readings were hilariously wrong.

The Gear That Makes This Easy

Look for a humidistat controller with **adjustable differential settings.**

Not all of them have this!

Some cheap plug-in models use a fixed differential that you can't change — and it's usually too narrow for mushroom growing.

Controllers like the Inkbird IHC-200 let you set both your target humidity and your differential independently.

That's what you want.

Bottom Line

Set your target RH.

Add a 5% differential.

Stop short-cycling.

Your humidifier lasts longer, your humidity stays steadier, and your mushrooms actually finish fruiting without throwing a tantrum.

It's a small adjustment that makes a huge difference!
