Your hygrometer is lying to you.
Maybe just a little.
Maybe a lot.
And when you're trying to fruit mushrooms, that lie can mean the difference between fat, healthy pins and a tray of cracked, aborted caps.
I learned this the hard way (like most things in life!).
I spent weeks tweaking my fruiting chamber, misting like a maniac, and wondering why my oyster mushrooms looked like sad little raisins.
Turns out my hygrometer was reading 8% too high.
I thought I was at 90% humidity.
I was actually at 82%.
Ouch.
So let's fix that.
Right now.
Here's what you need:
Mix the salt with just enough water to make it damp.
Think wet sand at the beach, not soup.
Put the salt mixture in the bottle cap.
Place it and your hygrometer inside the ziplock bag.
Seal it up. Walk away.
After 12 hours, that salt slurry creates a stable environment of exactly 75% relative humidity. It's science.
It's reliable. It's beautiful.
Now check your hygrometer reading.
Whatever it says, note the difference from 75%.
That's your offset.
If it reads 72%, you know it runs 3% low.
If it reads 80%, it runs 5% high.
Write that number on a piece of tape and stick it right on the hygrometer.
Done!

Most people calibrate hygrometers for cigar humidors or reptile tanks.
Those applications are forgiving.
Mushrooms?
Not so much.
Fruiting mushrooms typically need humidity between 85% and 95%.
That's a narrow window.
A hygrometer that's off by 5% could have you either drowning your mycelium or drying it out.
Neither is fun.
Here's what nobody tells you:
Humidity inside your fruiting chamber isn't uniform.
The air near your fan is drier.
The air near your substrate is wetter.
The corners can be completely different from the center.
Place your calibrated hygrometer at substrate level, right where your mushrooms are actually growing.
Not on top of the chamber.
Not stuck to the side wall near the lid.
Right where the pins form.
That's the reading that matters.
For mushroom growing, you want a hygrometer accurate to within ±3%.
Anything worse than that and you're basically guessing.
Digital hygrometers in the $15-30 range usually get you there after calibration.
You don't need lab-grade equipment.
You just need to know your offset.
Recalibrate every few months.
Hygrometers drift over time, especially cheap ones.
The salt test takes zero skill and costs zero dollars.
There's no excuse not to do it.
Your mushrooms will thank you. Quietly...
