How Much Does It Cost to Start Growing Mushrooms at Home?

It depends on which level/species you want to start with

One of the best things about mushroom growing is that the startup cost is genuinely low.

You can get into this hobby for less than the price of a nice dinner out, or you can invest more for equipment that makes the process smoother and more consistent.

It all depends on how deep you want to go right away.

Here is what you can expect to spend at different levels with different species.

At the most basic level, you can start growing gourmet mushrooms for roughly $20-$40.

The cost of most kits are around $20-$25.

For the bucket method, this gets you:

a bag of grain spawn from an online supplier
a five-gallon bucket from a hardware store
a bag of straw from a feed store or garden center, and
a spray bottle for misting.

That is genuinely all you need for a simple oyster mushroom bucket grow.

You probably already own some of these items.

If you want to invest a basic monotub setup for growing magic mushrooms

Plan on spending between $50-$150.

At the basic monotub level, this covers:

a large plastic storage container
grain spawn (you make yourself)
a bag of substrate material such as coco coir and vermiculite
a spray bottle
rubbing alcohol for sanitizing
a water heater
thermometer and hygrometer
a light
genetics (spores or cultures)- need to buy separately

The grain often sits in hot delivery trucks and warehouses.

This will significantly negatively affect the quality of the grain- and likely set you up for contamination.

The KEY to a successful grow often starts at the quality of grain and grain spawn you begin with.

With this route, the costs go up more.

A pressure cooker capable of reaching fifteen PSI is the biggest single expense, typically running between $70-$150 depending on the size and brand.

You will also want unicorn bags, a bag sealer, and a few other lab-style supplies and micronutrients.

At this level, you might spend $200-$400, but you are now set up to be almost entirely self-sufficient in your mushroom growing.

For outdoor log cultivation for gourmet species

The main costs are plug spawn, which runs about $20-$40 for a bag of one hundred plugs, a drill and drill bit sized for the plugs, and cheese wax or beeswax for sealing the holes.

If you have access to freshly cut hardwood logs for free, your total cost is under $50.

A few things to keep in mind about ongoing costs

Substrate materials like straw, coco coir, and vermiculite are inexpensive and go a long way.

Grain spawn is a recurring cost unless you learn to make your own (again...I highly recommend for growing magic mushrooms).

Rubbing alcohol and other sanitizing supplies are cheap but essential.

The biggest ongoing cost for most home growers is spawn, which is why many people eventually learn to produce their own using cultures and unicorn bags.

Do not feel like you need to buy everything at once.

Start with the basics for your chosen method, get a successful grow under your belt, and then invest in upgrades as your interest and skills grow.

Many experienced growers started with nothing more than a bucket, some straw, and a bag of spawn for gourmet species.
