Ah, this is one of my absolute favorite things to do and write about... ceremony!
Why?
Because whenever I'm in sacred ceremony, even just with myself, I feel connected to something greater and more mystical.
My ancestors and guides.
My creator.
My body and soul's innate ability to heal.
Heal your soul.
Heal your ancestral wounds.
Pass on healthier DNA to your kids (epigenetics).
I grew up all over New Mexico, and indigenous peoples and ceremony is something I have been around since I was 5.
I learned a lot about ceremony from:
I founded the world’s first woman-founded magic mushroom church in 2021, so I could have my women’s retreats legally in Colorado.
My attorney, Sean McCallister, helped me with this, and he wrote the legislation for Colorado to decriminalize statewide in 2022.

I have since dissolved my non-profit church because, amongst other reasons, Colorado decriminalized psilocybin ceremony so there was no legal reason for the church structure anymore (and muuuuuch less paperwork for the accountant during taxtime).
I was the Medicine Woman, retreat guide and medicine facilitator for our women’s psilocybin retreat, and I hosted an incredible shamanic sound practitioner who later became my shamanic sound teacher.
I have offered dozens of women’s microdosing ceremonies to my local coven and women.
I have guided hundreds of women’s circles.
Being in ceremony with women, especially with mushrooms, is one of my favorite things EVER.
I love ritual.
It is my jam...
And I also sense I've been a medicine woman in a previous or parallel lifetime.
Our women's retreat
Ecstatic dance at our retreatI have a morning ceremony every day.
Rituals like getting up in the morning, making your bed and getting coffee and breakfast.
That’s a ritual.
Getting ready for bed, drinking Reishi tea before bed, brushing your teeth, reviewing what you are grateful for about your day…that’s ritual.
There is ritual in our birthday, wedding and holiday celebrations.
There is ritual within our relationships.
There is a magic that is created within ritual and ceremony.

Who the fuck doesn't need magic in their life right now?!
And ritual leaves you feeling:
Because that is what ceremony and ritual are about…connection.
Connection to:

And guess what?
We are wired to connect.
And us humans have participated in ritual and ceremony since the dawn of our time…
Yep, we were dancing around the fire eating mushrooms and making music when we were cavemen and women.
So, to feel called to create your own ceremony or participate in one is something that is literally in our DNA.
It takes a lot of courage to journey with this medicine, so if you feel curiosity and also a fair amount of fear (mycophobia), you are perfectly situated for a magic mushroom ritual...no matter the dose.
For a macrodose magic mushroom ritual, honoring the ceremony with reverent preparation is an absolute MUST.
This preparation is what separates a casual experience from a truly transformative therapeutic mushroom ceremony.
If you have a history of:
...you are not a good candidate for a macrodose ceremony.
If you have any questions, reach out to me below.

If you have a history of trauma, make sure you are working with a trauma therapist.
They don't necessarily have to be a psilocybin facilitator (mine isn't), but you need to work with a professional alongside your ceremony (not at the same time...that would be weird).
Ideally, you are working with them for several months, at least, before diving into a macrodose mushroom ceremony.
There is a lot of language out there around PTSD and psilocybin triggering traumatic memories...
Yes, this is true — it can happen.
It also happens in the real world 24/7 without mushrooms, so...
If you have PTSD and you approach a macrodose magic mushroom ritual with reverent preparation, intention, and integration, you can absolutely do a macrodose ceremony by yourself.
In fact, I encourage it...
There is NO WAY I would have wanted anyone around during my previous macro journeys...even having my dogs around was very distracting.
I accidentally left my oldest pup, Franti, outside and it was really hot, so then it spun my journey into a storm spiral of self-shame and regret...not ideal for a macrodose situation.
Yes, he was ok, but it totally overtook my journey and one would call it a "bad trip", but I don't believe it was a bad trip.
I learned how hard I am on myself during very human moments.
You don't need to pay thousands of dollars for one facilitated-session...unless you feel that's what you really want and need, especially with PTSD (including you veterans!).
Having someone's energy right next to you or even around you immensely affects your journey.

I will never forget how excited I was to meet with Kristina Hunter, my mentor, after I had just sold out my retreat.
I was very much like, "What's next teacher!?" with childlike giddy and immense pride of my accomplishments.
Instead, the look on her face was one of apprehension, disappointment and trepidation.
The look on her face said "Oh no".
She said, "Erin, all it takes is one person to completely throw off another's journey and experience."
She then told me a story of her partner's recent psilocybin macrodose group he facilitated, where one guy farted and started a fart-fest and everyone laughed and farted the whole time.
And that was their ceremony.
Who knows?
Maybe that was the medicine they all needed.

I've also heard of another ceremony where a woman got completely naked and distracted and impacted the entire group's journey...and she was quite embarrassed later on when she found out what she did.
I feel like that's something I would do!
Kristina then informed me she rarely does group ceremonies without doing 1:1 journeys with each person beforehand.
Yikes!
I just sold out my retreat at a hefty $3888 per spot highlighting the group ceremony with an incredible sound shaman...and now my mentor is telling me I have a very risky and potentially out-of-control situation ahead of me?!
Offering a macrodose mushroom ceremony to a bunch of women who have never done mushrooms before?
Oooof.
That one hurt.
Yep, it was that moment that I decided the group ceremony macrodose situation was not work meant for me.
Before even my first (and only) retreat.
Thankfully, our ceremony did go off without a hitch, but there were definitely a bunch of shenanigans going on that were very distracting to everyone.
It felt like wrangling cats to me.

I have never participated in/received a facilitated macrodose journey with mushrooms.
I had a very bad experience in Peru for an ayahuasca ceremony that was basically a tourist trap (most of them are)...
I felt the bad intentions behind their ceremonies.
Plus, I had suppressed traumas I had never tapped into.
So, being around other people under the medicine was too much for me, as is the case for a lot of people with PTSD.

It is worth mentioning that when I first got into the professional psychedelic world in 2020, I was STUNNED to learn about all the sexual predators that host psychedelic retreats and ceremonies.
Yep...it's so disgusting but it is SO TRUE.
You go to a "shaman" to heal your childhood traumas and you find yourself being sexually assaulted during your mushroom ceremony.
Yep, it happens MORE than you would want to even know.
So, I have done many solo macrodose journeys, and I have a history of childhood sexual trauma and multiple college gang rape trauma, among others...
My journeys are often dark and filled with lots of tears...but I always feel lighter on the other side.
The grandmothers say that's when the mushrooms are "cleaning".
Psilocybin is the medicine that can dig deeper into the psyche than any other modality for deep, suppressed trauma healing.
Just make sure you are supporting yourself heavily during this entire journey:
For a month before your magic mushroom ritual, eat a plant-based diet.
Refrain from alcohol, hard drugs, psychedelics of any kind, and weed.
Fraggle Rock, anyone?
Mushrooms are the ultimate decomposers.
They dig, dig, dig and break down and digest.
So, what you take into "the cave" (the ceremony) with you — be it:
...all of it will be present with you in the ceremony space.
For a month.
Eat plant based.
Gourmet mushrooms are a great source of protein to eat for the month.
No sex...not even with yourself.
Sorry, not sorry.
Don't shoot the messenger.
The mushroom ceremony will be a consciousness-expanding experience.
Orgasm is also a consciousness-expanding experience.
Save it for the ceremony ;)
Avoid social media, TV if possible, and especially pharmaceutical commercials.
Be mindful of what "data" you are putting into your psyche to be digested with your ceremony.
Be mindful of what you read.
Be mindful of what conversations you have and what language you are using towards yourself and others.
Do a lot of yoga.
Preferably hot yoga (26:2 "Bikram-style").
Sauna and sweat a lot.
Drink a lot of water.
Take a lot of Epsom salt baths.
Meditate.
I have several meditations on my YouTube channel.
Listen to sound baths.
Mind what you read.
Fill out the Life Inventory.
our women's retreat ceremony spaceFor the ceremony itself:
Take a lot of time and intention setting up your space.
Remember, hurried and rushed preparation energy will translate into your journey.
So...slow the f*ck down. Lol. Love you!
Make sure you are fasting.
But also make sure you have snacks ready that you will likely crave when you are coming out of the intense part of the journey.
You will probably want to eat.
Have those foods prepared ahead of time:
No coffee.
Give yourself the entire day for the ceremony.
The full experience will take four to six or more hours, depending on your dose, the strain, and the potency of the mushrooms.
"The more you go inside, the more there is to find. It is like a universe in there."
Maria Sabina, the original mushroom priestess
María Sabina was renowned for her sacred velada ceremonies using psilocybin mushrooms in Oaxaca, Mexico.
She referred to the mushrooms as "the little saints" (los niños santos) and viewed them as a divine gift for healing and spiritual revelation.
Historically, the Mazatec grandmothers use Golden Teachers for macrodose ceremonies because they offer a beautiful, introspective healing energy for the journey.
Hopefully you are growing your own medicine :)
Let someone know you are doing a solo ceremony, especially if you have a history of trauma.
Have a cozy setup:
Make a dedicated **magic mushroom ritual** space.
Make sure your space is clean and sage or copal the shit out of your space.
It makes a difference trust me!
Energy is energy and if you have old, stale energy or unwanted energies they will absolutely be a part of your journey.
Create an altar with:
Create a playlist of soothing ceremony music.
I created an amazing women's mushroom ceremony for you on Spotify.
Here is another Spotify mushroom ceremony playlist.
Or have a dance party to Pretty Lights...
Come on, you know me...
Pull some oracle cards.
What are you feeling called to do during your ceremony?
If you feel like intuitively painting, have that ready.
If you feel like writing, have that ready.
If you feel like making music, have that ready.
Maybe you go for a journey in nature.
Maybe you lie down.
Maybe you take an Epsom salt bath.
Maybe all of the above.
As soon as you decide to have yourself a ceremony, immediately begin crafting your intentions for your journey.
Ideally you have grown your own medicine for an exponentially more radical experience.
Your intention gives the mushrooms a compass.
The mushrooms, however, give you what you need.
Light some sage, palo santo, or copal.
Gather your favorite essential oils.
Have some tea made to drink.
Turn all notifications off on your devices.
Make sure your dogs are somewhere they will be happy and safe for a few hours.
...nibble them with your front teeth only.
Think about your intentions for your journey.
Marinate them in your saliva for several minutes before swallowing.
You can also make a tea by pouring boiling water over the fruit bodies.
Let it steep for ten minutes and drink it with honey, then eat the fruiting bodies after.
Or you don't have to eat the fruiting bodies at all — you can just drink the tea — but know that you are missing out on a lot of psilocybin this way.
Or you can marinate the mushrooms in honey for a day or so beforehand and eat them that way.
Yum!
You can drink cacao later on when you feel you want something to sip.
Cacao opens the heart and psilocybin opens the mind, connecting them both beautifully.
I like to put:
...thank your ancestors and the ancestors of the land for teaching the ways with the medicine.
Thank the mushrooms for what they will help you with and reveal to you.
Call in your spirit guides, protectors, angels, and archangels.
Thank yourself for gifting your soul such an incredible experience.
Come back to your intention.
Get cozy and do what you feel you are called to do.
Journal as things come up.
Your breath is your anchor and your safety flotation device.
If you have an intense experience, just trust that you are never given anything you cannot handle.
Surrender to the experience.
Breathe.
Say positive affirmations to support your journey and keep your frequency high.
This is why a 26:2 hot yoga practice is key in healing (especially with a history of trauma) — because you are so uncomfortable in a safe environment that it rewires your nervous system to learn to breathe your way through uncomfortable moments.
That skill becomes invaluable during a magic mushroom ritual.
This has been studied by the godfather of PTSD research, and why he says yoga is the #1 way to heal your PTSD wound.
Take care of yourself after the ceremony.
Thank your ancestors.
Release your guides.
Close the ceremony space.
Simply say "This ceremony is now closed".
Even if that simply means honoring the medicine again and expressing gratitude to the ancestors and guides who held space for you.
Take care of yourself.
Give yourself a few days, ideally, before going back to the busyness of your life, work, and daily responsibilities.
I know that is not always possible, but the more attention you pay to the details of your preparation and post-ceremony integration, the more mind-blowing and transformative your experience will be.
Integrate.
Integrate.
Your integration will last years, and perhaps lifetimes.
Integration never stops.
Integration is the majority of the journey with psilocybin.
The ceremony is just the ceremony, to unlock the door, that you now need to walk through with reverent integration.
If you don't have a reverent integration practice, your ceremony will likely just be a beautiful experience that will be a great memory.
With integration, the ceremony becomes a catalyst for healing and meaningful, lasting change towards happiness and health.
For a mid-dose, give yourself the same reverence on ceremony day as described above.
A mid-dose is technically 1.5–3 grams — somewhere in between a macrodose and a microdose! Lol.
It is literally impossible to tell the exact potency of your dose unless you have third-party testing telling you precisely what that dose contains.
So approach even a mid-dose therapeutic mushroom ceremony with respect and care.
If you feel lightheaded, lie down.
Macrodose psilocybin journeys can lower your blood pressure.
If you feel scared, suicidal, or unsafe in any way, call the person who knows you are journeying.
Journal about your insights the rest of the day and in the days that follow.
Share anything that comes up for you with our community below...
You will no doubt feel very raw emotionally, like you are a baby in a new world.
This is completely normal and a sign that the medicine is working.
For a microdose, you can:
A microdosing ritual can be as simple or as elaborate as you feel called to make it.
I love offering shamanic sound journeys with a microdose to women.
Women have been getting together in sacred circle with mushrooms since the early ancient Greek days.
It's literally in our DNA to do magic mushroom rituals together, and it is documented all through time — including the early days of Christianity, where women taught Jesus (aka "The Mushroom Man") how to use psychedelic wine to commune with your creator and guides.
You can read all about it in *The Immortality Key* by Brian Muraresku.
The writer devotes his professional life and career to researching the far roots of mushroom ceremonies, including proof hidden away in the bowels of the Vatican.
It is a must-read book for anyone interested in these magic mushroom rituals that we humans feel so compelled to participate in — and have been participating in for thousands of years.
However you choose to approach your ceremony — whether through a microdosing ritual, a mid-dose journey, or a full macrodose experience — remember that the magic is not just in the mushroom.
It is in your intention, your preparation, your willingness to surrender, and your commitment to integration long after the ceremony ends.
Trust the medicine.
Trust yourself.
And trust the ancient wisdom that has been guiding these sacred ceremonies since the very beginning of human consciousness.
Your shroom question is likely someone else's question, too! Your comments are welcome
