“Microdosing is not all rainbows and unicorns all the time, especially with a history of trauma. The mushrooms don't allow you to hide from any part of yourself at any dose, which is the beautiful and terrifying juxtaposition of this sacred healing mushroom.”

5 microdosing mushrooms CONS nobody talks about

microdosing mushrooms cons

You've heard the buzz.

Microdosing psilocybin mushrooms is the talk of the town, whispered about in productivity forums, celebrated by Silicon Valley biohackers, and making serious waves in scientific clinical trials.

But what are microdosing mushrooms cons?

The promises are dazzling:

  • present-moment awareness
  • enhanced creativity
  • laser-like focus
  • relief from anxiety, and
  • a sunnier disposition

It sounds like the ultimate life hack, doesn't it?

Almost like a short-cut in a sense...

But what happens when the reality doesn't quite match the hype?

What about the days when a microdose makes you want to curl up and cry instead of crushing your to-do list?

The truth is, these sacred fungi are not a simple supplement or a magic pill.

They are a profound tool for healing and self-discovery, but that journey isn't always linear or easy.

It's a path that requires:

  • respect
  • awareness, and
  • a willingness to face what lies beneath the surface

If you're considering this path, or are already on it, let's move beyond the headlines.

Let's talk about the real, unfiltered experience of microdosing

Aka, microdosing mushrooms CONS—

  • the challenges,
  • the surprises, and
  • the deep truths that can lead to genuine transformation

#1 It's a tool, not a magic fix

Now this probably is a disappointment for some of you to hear, given how "magical" psilocybin mushrooms are...and they are, trust me.

They're called "magic" for a reason.

The biggest misconception is assuming that once you start microdosing, all your problems will magically disappear.

Yes, these mushrooms are magical for reasons too numerous to list, but not in the way our quick-fix culture has trained us to expect.

In our pop-a-pill society, we've learned to "take this and feel that."

We blindly assume the mushrooms work the same way.

Um, no.

The mushrooms are simply a tool to open a door, to show you a lesson, to heighten your awareness.

How you heal is determined by what you *do* with the information they reveal.

Once you receive the message through reverent integration, the real work, change, and transformation begins.

The mushroom is the key, but you are the one who has to walk through the door and explore the room.

#2 It will bring up what you've pushed down

If you have suppressed or undertreated trauma or unpleasant life experiences, and you are not ready to "go there," microdosing might be an unpleasant experience.

I have experienced this myself and witnessed it in clients.

The mushrooms have a way of holding up a mirror to the parts of ourselves we've tried to ignore.

This is how they heal.

Resisting what you are shown can set you up for a struggle.

This is true in life in general, and the mushrooms heighten and emphasize the lesson… just so you don’t miss it.

This is where you tap into the energies of courage and bravery, with the support of your higher power, if you wish.

That said, mushrooms can be exactly what you need to heal from these traumas, but you have to be ready for it.

Surrendering to the experience fully, whether a microdose or a macrodose, is key.

And don't forget to breathe...

This can be considered one of the microdosing mushrooms CONS...

If you are not prepared to face uncomfortable emotions or memories, it may be wise to wait until you have the proper support system in place, like a therapist or a trusted guide.

Critics of microdosing mushrooms (and clearly people who don't microdose) will discuss 3 "risks" of microdosing mushrooms:

1) In a lot of places, psiliobyin is still illegal.

True! But this is also a beautiful opportunity for someone like you to start the conversation around decriminalization in your town, city or state.

You would be pleasantly surprised to know how many US states' decriminalization efforts were started by the average Jo.

2) You don't know what you're getting in mushrooms from an outside source

True!

This is why I advocate strongly for growing your own!

Especially in this fentanyl day and age...

I would never trust any source of mushrooms from anyone unless you personally know the person who grew them, and even then, they did not grow them specifically for YOUR healing..so they are already a lower-quality mushroom than if you grew them yourself.

3) There are no long-term studies on microdosing.

Also true!

AND ancestors from all over the world have used psilocybin mushrooms, of all doses, for thousands of years.

There is so much value in learning and honoring what the people who walked this land for centuries practiced...

FAR more value, in my eyes, than what is determined in a sterile, unrealistic clinical trial.

#3 Your emotions get a volume boost

Microdosing can, and often does, make you more emotionalboth the highs and the lows.

One day you might find yourself weeping with gratitude at the beauty of a sunset; the next, you might feel a wave of grief for a long-forgotten loss.

Why does this happen?

This, my friend, is your ego gently dissolving.

The armor you wear to get through the day thins, allowing for a more authentic, heart-centered experience of life.

This heightened sensitivity can be considered one of the microdosing mushrooms CONS.

You might feel extra sensitive to:

  • external triggers,
  • people,
  • social media, or
  • crowds

If this is you, just plan your microdose days for times when you are stimulated the least by external things.

It’s about working *with* the medicine, not against it.

This is that surrender and let go part...

#4 Psilocybin is unpredictable by nature

Remember, the mushrooms give you what you *need*, not necessarily what you want or intend.

They can be a bit of a wild card.

This is what lead to the very real "mycophobia".

Fear of mushrooms.

Some might consider this one of the microdosing mushrooms CONS.

You might take a microdose hoping it will give you a jolt of energy, which it often can.

If, however, your body is exhausted or you're processing grief just under the surface, that same dose might make you want to lie down and nap for the afternoon.

And so it is with the mushrooms.

This "wild card" effect also applies to dosage.

You can’t always avoid this.

I have taken the exact same dose on two different days and felt it much more strongly and in a completely different way on one of them.

A lot depends on YOU. How rested, nourished, and hydrated you are all come into play.

The best approach is to start low, go slow, and keep a journal to track how different variables affect your experience.

#5 Sourcing can be a big hurdle (so grow your own!)

Growing your own medicine for healing is sooooo much THE MEDICINE!

It is literally a night and day experience microdosing with your own medicine compared to sourcing from someone else.

I promise!

Legally sourcing and acquiring high-quality mushrooms can be a challenge depending on where you live.

This is why growing them yourself is such a stupendous choice.

Growing your own medicine for healing will no doubt be one of the coolest and most rewarding experiences of your life.

When you cultivate them yourself, YOU get to choose the energy your mushrooms are infused with (remember, mushrooms are over 92% water and absorb the energies of their environment).

YOU get to harvest them at the prime time for potency.

This process creates a sacred relationship with the medicine before you even ingest it, making the entire journey more intentional and powerful.

Microdosing mushrooms CONS: The invitation to a deeper journey

This isn't meant to scare you away from microdosing.

Quite the opposite.

It's an invitation to approach this practice with the reverence and respect it deserves.

By understanding that mushrooms are a collaborative tool, not a cure-all, you empower yourself to engage in one of the most profound journeys of personal growth available.

When you are prepared for:

  • the emotional depth,
  • the unpredictability, and
  • the personal responsibility it requires,

...you move beyond the hype and into the heart of the work.

There are only positive things and profound growth that can come from a reverent microdosing practice.

The path may not always be easy, but for those willing to walk it with open eyes and an open heart, the transformation is immeasurable.
