After learning to cultivate many different types of gourmet mushrooms, I quickly discovered that oyster mushrooms are the easiest (and most delicious) for beginners to grow.
With North Spore's mushroom grow kit, the block arrives fully colonized with mushroom mycelium—the white, root-like network of the mushroom.
This means A LOT of the daunting work of mushroom cultivation has been done for you.
Preparing NorthSpore's oyster mushroom grow kit is simple
1. Cut a one-inch deep “X” into the entire side of the oyster mushroom bag, using a knife.
Keep in mind that different species of mushrooms have different instructions for initiating and growing the kit.
2. Soak the block overnight in water. I turn the oyster mushroom kit X-side down and submerge the X cut in water in a large kitchen bowl.
3. Place it in a simple "microenvironment" to keep it humid. This can be a plastic bin turned on its side or even a DIY one like the one I made from my dog's insulated food delivery box.
It is important to have one side of the container open to the side, as seen below, to allow CO2 the mushrooms "exhale" to run off.
This prevents leggy or woody mushrooms...an undesirable texture.
This isn't the oyster mushroom kit, but simply an illustration of my diy home fruiting chamber4. Simply spray the inside of your container a few times a day with water, and within a week, you will see "pins" (baby mushrooms) starting to form.
